The day after, all I can say is “WOW!”

First let me say congrats to the Primary Winners Al Nalley and Joe Hooe, it’s in your hands now. Remember what’s important, stay focused on the message and deliver a product that the electorate can count on. Until of course I return in 4 years. “AUGIE in 2014!”

Second, having had this experience has given me an education that quite frankly cannot be taught, you have to experience it. The lessons learned, invaluable, and the friends gained are many. Although I am disappointed, I remain proud to have had the opportunity and most definitely impressed with my performance at the polls.

Finally, to all of my supporters, I want to thank you for all of your time, and if I can make one last request of you…please don’t stop now, the fight is just beginning. Find your candidate and continue to use your talents to help return Maryland to it’s rightful owners, and save it for our children and grandchildren.

“Did you know Thomas Jefferson’s nickname as a young man was Augie too.”

LOL, I’m not going anywhere, see you around!

Patuxent Publishing announces Editorial endorsements

Candidate Commentary: Although pleased with the endorsement of a panel, endorsement of the people is most important. Your support has been overwhelming, and you encouragement motivating. Thanks for all the well wishes!

We cannot change what we do not challenge!

Our endorsements for candidates in the Sept. 14 primary election were a consensus of the Baltimore County editorial board of Patuxent Publishing Co., publishers of this newspaper. The core of our endorsement process was the editorial board conducting face-to-face meetings with all candidates for a particular office in the same room at the same time. As candidates answered our questions in turn, we were able to more closely compare their respective insights, views and temperaments.
But our decisions were not based exclusively on these voluntary meetings, and in some cases attendance was impossible for some candidates. In those instances, and as part of the overall process, we also took into account public statements, writings, résumés, other interviews and voting records.
Below are our recommendations for the contested primaries. We do not endorse in uncontested races. We also do not endorse in parts of the county where our newspapers do not circulate.
Ultimately, the decision rests with you, our readers and other county voters. To help the voters, our newspapers carry the Baltimore County League of Women Voters’ Primary Election Guide this week. The guide includes information on candidates in each of the races. We urge all citizens to make their choices known by exercising their right to vote.

District 12A Republicans

District 12A straddles the border between Howard and Baltimore counties. The four Republican contenders split along geographical lines, with two Lansdowne residents and two Catonsville.

We’re splitting that ticket in endorsing Brian Matulonis, from Lansdowne, and David Aughenbaugh, from Catonsville. Both are newcomers to the political scene.

As fresh faces, they bring a better chance for a Republican victory, as both Albert Nalley and Joe Hooe have been rejected by area voters in past elections.

In addition to offering a broader perspective in terms of geography, this combination would also bring complementary skill sets.

Matulonis, a Baltimore police officer, could put his experience in public safety to good use as the legislature prioritizes that part of its stressed budget.

Aughenbaugh has some concrete ideas about managing the state’s finances that would at least provide a jumping-off point for negotiation. As an engineer for Verizon, he certainly has some knowledge that would prove valuable as the legislature delves into telecommunications issues.

Illusion vs. Vision

I recently read the following article, entitled: Toxic Leadership: When Grand Illusions Masquerade as Noble Visions* – by Jean Lipman-Blumen, in the article the author attempts to consider the plight of followers caught in the thrall of toxic leaders, who first charm, then manipulate, and ultimately leave their followers worse off than they found them...”

If you read the article / essay you will see the author may have a totally different philosophy as to whom is a toxic leader, but you will get the point.
I could take up way too much of your time pontificating the point of ‘toxic leadership’ so I will save this for another time. However, the other point, a byproduct of toxic leadership is the subject of this week’s email. Illusion vs. Vision.
In Maryland, it’s difficult for some to discern between illusion and vision. Many have succumbed to the illusion that the government has the answer to everything that ails us, and will provide certain protection and comfort. To the contrary, our leadership and representation has lacked the vision necessary to position the harsh realities and in turn will leave each of us ill prepared for the consequences of their actions. The areas of most concern in this election year is pretty much the same regardless of your geographic location. It’s all about the Jobs, Spending and potential 2011 ‘ambush tax’ a phrase correctly described by Del Pat McDonough and your individual liberties. Although we can discuss this at length I will provide a few words on the subject in hopes to get my point across.
A large majority of our Elected officials have captured the emotions of electorate promising relief from anxiety and fears. “The crisis will be averted” through the actions of the government. Unfortunately, Many times it is the ‘elected’ that actually extend the anxiety and fear whether directly or indirectly, making promises they surely cannot keep and or deliver. This folks is ”Illusion“, our government through these proxies will give you a false sense of security and all too often we offer ‘our’ blind faith to these “Saviors” and their promise of a Utopia, one that is unattainable.
The feelings one may experience, through ‘Vision‘ is much more a ‘real’ and sometimes a harsh look at real problems. Candidates and elected officials alike that can create a reality based solely on the attainable goals while disclosing there are painful consequences are people of “Vision”. They will engage and and include lots of people with differing talents, points of view, talents and strengths, they are able to orchestrate all of these people and motivate them toward a common goal.
The “Vision”, we have for our state is to explain that the “Illusions” we’ve had to bear witness for better than 60 years, are in fact unattainable, the [private citizens and businesses] of this “Utopia” cannot sustain it’s existence, rather we will be a state of responsible, accountable contributors, Responsible to each other. We will support a fiscally sound, caring government interested in creating “Opportunity” not “Illusions”.

When we weren’t looking…

Today, I am 44, yep, born in 1966 on August 9. Way too many birthdays pass without realizing that so much goes on during the preceding 364 days, then BAM, you are another year older. What happens when you are living your life? when you weren’t looking?
Here’s an example:
I attended a very special party yesterday, for a young lady (my other daughter) whom has been a part of our extended family, as she ready’s herself for the ‘next stage’ of her life, College! We have known this young lady and her family for nearly 19 years, as neighbors, as friends and now our friendship has grown into something closer to family. A family relationship than many folks can’t claim within their own. She is no doubt ready for this stage of her life, and although we were celebrating this event, when it came time to leave, the emotions that come over us are no easier to handle. For goodness sakes this is not goodbye, this is just a celebratory send off. Right?
We tend to live our lives with total disregard sometimes for the changes that happen around us. I recently spoke to a group of supporters, I spoke to this phenomenon and described it as a “Rip Van Winkle’ moment. Your own experience as an example, You leave home, go to college or begin your life’s work, then all of a sudden years pass, many birthdays, and in a ‘fog’ you are preparing your child for that same event you experienced years before.
The only motivation that I have ever needed to justify the reason for my candidacy has been to be an advocate for those whom are preparing to begin this stage of life, and those waiting in the wings. There needs to be some comfort knowing that we have not left our children and grandchildren holding the bag. They to will at some point, live these sleepy times when so much happens in the blink of an eye.
I am not sure how many more birthdays I will have, but I leave you with this…I am no longer going along in the sleepy manner I had in the previous 25+ years of my life. Participating in the process of government is not just going to happen as a candidate or delegate, preserving the future for those whom are next, is up to all of the citizens of this state and nation. We MUST leave something for the “kids”, that something is NOT  ’bigger government’.

Kelsey, you will spend the next four years, learning lessons that will carry you through the remainder of your life. You’ve been well prepared and you will be a success in whatever you chose to pursue. Good Luck! We LOVE YOU! And while you are living your life, I’ll do my best to keep the government off your back and out of your pockets.

Mr Dave

This all happened when I wasn’t looking…

Does Maryland have a “Spending Addiction?”

Well let’s take a look. The definition of a ‘compulsive’ spending‘ is defined as ‘excessive and out of control’. As with other addictions, the spending addict continues to spend  in the face of adverse consequences. Sometimes referred to as “shopoholism”, compulsive spending can create massive financial, long term problems. These consequences are identical in nature to the consequences created from drug addiction or alcoholism.

I am not a student of  ’Psychology’, but the application of this diagnosis should be pretty easy, right? Actually, this is pretty scary, because we are not talking about one of those poor souls on A&E’s Intervention, we are speaking about an entire “Assembly” of people that make a conscience decision to spend money that they don’t have. Why? I am not really sure, but it does in fact call into question whether or not they have an addiction and how do we treat it?

Let’s first take a look at the symptoms: (information adapted from http://www.recoveryconnection.org)

  • Breaking Your Budget: Many times you will break your budget by spending more than you have agreed to. This can create tremendous financial strain as you spend well above your means.
    • Check – In Maryland, the Governor’s power to ‘budget’ is daunting, he sets the budget and the General Assembly has limited powers to decrease those appropriations. The shuffleboard tactics practiced by our Governor gives the appearance of a balanced budget, they are bound by the constitution to balance the budget after all, right?
  • Compulsive Buying: When you spend you may go with the intention of buying one shirt, but before you know it you end up with six of them.
    • Check – In times where everyone knows we don’t have the money to spend, “Bond Bill” appropriations continue to plague our state financial issues…Each year, the General Assembly has discretionary spending allowance in the amount of 15 million dollars, and “Creation of State Debt”, the equivalent of “pork”, these are mostly used for the delegation to bring $ home to the districts, regardless of the impact to the State financial outlook.
  • Chronic Problem: A spending addiction is a continuous problem and one that gets worse over time. Generally speaking, you experience it more than once or twice a year. As with other addictions compulsive spending is progressive in nature.
    • Check – No doubt we have a ‘chronic’ problem…and the pat answer from most of the delegation is that Maryland has a “AAA” bond rating and we are not as bad as other states. This security blanket is worn and tattered, suddenly we will find ourselves wondering why? Spending Affordability? I think NOT.
  • Hiding the Problem: You tend to hide your purchases due to the financial problems you have already created. You want to avoid arguments with your significant other. It is as if you are hiding your shame. You might create second and third credit card accounts unknown to anyone else.
    • Check – Hiding the problem in Maryland is attributed to the budget transfers, gimmicks and reliance on the Federal Govt to supplement our spending habits…but when the Fed dollars are gone, we have no answer, except to raise taxes and further burden Maryland businesses and families.
  • The Return Cycle: You might often return your purchases due to the guilt and shame you feel. Unfortunately, you place yourself back into the spending environment, and while feeling the guilt and shame you end up on another spending spree.
    • Check – Not sure how this applies, because we don’t seem to return anything…rather we may tend to hide it in the closet and act as if it doesn’t exist.
  • Impaired Relationships: It is not uncommon to find dysfunctional or unhealthy relationships in your home. Relationships begin to deteriorate as you spend more, create more and more debt, cover up debt with deception, and start to isolate yourself from others as you become preoccupied with your behavior.
    • Check – The relationships with the taxpayer, businesses and families alike have been impaired to the point that they’d rather move away, small businesses, large businesses and wealthy individuals throughout Maryland have found friendlier neighboring states to establish their businesses or homes.
  • Consequences: Like any other addiction, compulsive spending has nothing to do with how much you shop or spend and everything to do with consequences. There are always consequences to addictive behavior, and you will not recover unless you are allowed to feel and experience those consequences.
    • Check – The consequences…we are ‘broke’, we know full well we can’t pay our bills, yet our representation continues with total disregard to the consequences, consequences that will have ill effect on the future generations of Maryland. Our children, and our grandchildren, if they choose to stay…If I were to offer advice, MOVE….unless we can capture the minds of the sensible and vote out the progressive majority that plagues our government checkbook and credit cards.

Now that we’ve gone through the symptoms, it’s safe to say we can confirm the diagnosis….Maryland has a “Spending Addiction”, Now we need to prescribe the treatment, ready?

Lending your support and VOTE to rid ourselves of the current “Band Leader” and his “orchestra”, and restore common sense Leadership and a solid supporting cast that will take charge, and offer some kind of “INTERVENTION” to those afflicted with this devastating disorder.

MD Politics: “The Game: Dodge Ball”…Can citizen’s play?

Remember this?…(5th Grade, Gym Class…The Game: Dodge Ball) Even though in this politically correct world we live in, and we no longer condone Dodge Ball in our schools, the game has a very descriptive comparison to politics.

You’re standing on the sidelines, the captain’s are either chosen by the Gym teacher or they are ’self appointed’ to be the leaders of the game, some see this as favoritism and to be fair, potential for a leaders to be born. We want to complain or at least voice an opinion…yet we say nothing…Regardless, the game begins when the ”LEADERS” are chosen.

Then comes the selection process…One by one, the teams are created and the members selected, some of these folks are selected for their specific athletic talent, others are selected because of popularity or association to the leaders,(we’ll call this the clique’) not surprising…”COMMITTEES”

Then, the selection process is boiled down to the next group, a cluster of individuals whose talents are largely ignored, their participation not really required, and there actions are mostly dictated by one or both of the groups defined above. ”REPRESENTATIVES”

Finally, there is an assembly of people that are selected because they have to be…it’s the rules? These people are vastly different from the leaders and committees, they are never to be part of the decision making process, they are selected to be offered up as pawns…in keeping with the theme, we’ll call these folks…eh’ hem ”CITIZENS”

PREGAME…usually the leaders call the committee members to the side, just the committee members and a few representatives, the internal rules of engagement are established, there is a lot of whispering and pointing, never really addressing the ‘enemy’ but rather whom shall be offered up as pawns and who is to be protected on the team so to extend the life of the Leadership and those deemed important.

GAMETIME!

Citizens get pummeled first…end up watching from the sidelines, some representatives are sent to pick up the balls and throw them back to the so called stronger throwers, whose direction are they throwing?, well, …it’s at the direction of committee members and leadership. (remember that little meeting right before the game started) Finally, the balls have taken out citizens and a large portion of representatives.

Now there is much more room to maneuver and the leadership and a few committee members, the folks that remain have now realized that they are fighting for the survival and become less interested in loyalty and begin to fight to extend there survival. At this point in the game, things get a little heated…you’ll find a few brave will run up to the front line to get the ammunition and prepare an assault on the other team. However, the most telling are those unwilling to take a stand, will retreat to the rear of the gym and side step the incoming assault of ‘red rubber’ balls sent in their direction.

You’re pretty much in control of what happens next, figuratively speaking…

As a CITIZEN, I am tired of getting pummeled, looked upon as an acceptable casualty of the game, and misrepresented by those who continue to tell me that my interests’ are being best served by their selfish display of survival.

“Hello World!” it’s “Augie”

BIO: Focused Husband, Father & Friend – That’s pretty much all you need to know…My interests are purely focused on family and for all law abiding citizen’s of Maryland.  I have been married for 21 years, raising two awesome children and have a great network of friends and supporters. I have been working since I was 12 years old, always looking to fulfill those three pillars and have measured my success through these three very simple things. My intent was never to be, nor is it now, to be a politician rather a ‘voice’ for people like me that have worked hard to be a good husband, father, friend and citizen.

For the past 20+ years in the telecommunications field, demanding yet rewarding, I have the same desire to serve the people of Maryland, ethics and focus on opportunity for other Maryland folks that choose to follow similar paths.

Education: “School of hard knocks”, everything I have learned has been through living a life of hard work & real life experiences. Along the way ( from tradesman to engineer) I’ve been fortunate to experience some college coursework, and a lot of technical classes specifically for my many jobs in the industry. Looking back, I regret that I never finished college…but hard work has made me a success and leader in my field and for that I am very grateful.

Party Affiliation: Republican (Libertarian Leanings)

Political Experience: NONE

Political Philosophy: The ingredients for ‘good government’ are pretty simple. “Balanced” representation is vital to the process of government. Until such time as the legislature is no longer dominated by a single party, the issues important to some are not even considered for debate.

Until we get a seat at the table, we cannot expect our voice will be heard!”

Note: There is NOT one Democrat in the MD General Assembly that can or will make that statement. :) They hold all the power and dominate the ’seats’

  • Cut Spending – Restore a true balanced budget, Uncle Sam is broke too we can’t rely on him. We are all expected to operate in a manner that is responsible to support our families, shouldn’t the Government exercise the same practices?
  • Cut Taxes – Keep more of what you earn, I trust that Maryland families and businesses are smarter than policies that discourage growth and opportunity. By cutting taxes or at the very least holding the line on taxes, we create opportunity.
  • Limit the reaches of Government – by exercising the two points above, the expansion of Government is held in check or at the very least stifled.
  • Individual Responsibility and Liberties – The boundaries of Government have been expanded into every facet of our lives, they have adopted the policies and practices of a ‘true nanny’ state. There are many whom have become reliant upon the government, in many cases through no fault of their own, this doesn’t create anything but a larger ‘entitlement’ class.
  • BE BOLD – Everyone in Government wants to say they ‘do the hard work’…Hardly an attempt made, in my opinion, but in order for us to attack the real issues facing our State and the habits Government been accustom to forcing upon families and businesses…THE ENTIRE BUDGET, THE ENTIRE BUDGET must be up for scrutiny and CUTS!
